CHAN KENG KWANG THROUGH TO QUARTER-FINALS IN KAOHSIUNG; BERNARD TEY JUST MISS OUT

18 May 2007, Kaohsiung, TAIWAN: Singapore's Chan Keng Kwang defeated Taiwan's 2005 WPA World Champion Wu Chia-Ching 9-4 in the Group H decider to go through to the quarter-finals of the Guinness 9-Ball Tour Kaohsiung tournament, in one of the event's big surprises. Earlier in the day, Chan had recorded a solid 9-4 win over Indonesia's Mohammad Bewi Simanjuntak who also lost 9-3 to Wu.
Speaking after his win, Chan said: "I played well today. I played Wu Chia-Ching lots of times and lost to him most of the time, so it's time for me to beat him and this win has come as a nice surprise."
In Group D, Bernard Tey exited the tournament on tiebreak after all three players finished with one win and one loss apiece. In the morning session, Tey had defeated three-time World Junior Champion Wu Yu-Lun 9-8; Wu then defeated Antonio Gabica of the Philippines 9-4 in the afternoon session. Needing to win to go through automatically, Tey went down to Gabica 9-8 in the evening session. With Tey and Wu tied on racks won (17), Wu went through having lost fewer racks than Tey.
In Group G, reigning World 8-Ball and 9-Ball Champion Ronnie Alcano recovered from the brink of defeat to set up a quarter-final meeting with Chan. Trailing 3-7, Alcano found form to win six consecutive racks to shut out the promising Vietnamese player.
Asked about his chances against Alcano, Chan said: "I will stay calm and play my game, and hope for the best."
Among the day's upsets, Filipino Alex Pagulayan, the 2004 World Champion, went down to Indonesia's Ricky Yang 4-9 in his opening match. Suffering the after-effects of a bout of food poisoning, Pagulayan looked far from his best against Yang. Despite recovering to beat South Korea's Ryu Seong-Woo 9-8, the Group was won by Yang who completing a 9-2 trouncing of Ryu.
Three other Taiwanese players made the quarterfinals with Yang Ching-Shun, Lu Hui-Chan and Chao Fong-Pang winning Groups B, C and E respectively. Group A also went to the tie-break with Hong Kong's Au Chi Wai prevailing over Malaysia's Ibrahim Amir and Jakarta leg winner Chang Jung-Lin.
All four quarter-final matches will be televised live on STAR Sports at the following times (Hong Kong time):
